Martin Baker Aircraft awards MAOS & Human Factors and Error Management Programme to Baines Simmons
Martin Baker Aircraft (MBA), the world’s leading manufacturer of ejection seats and crashworthy seating systems, has brought in leading independent aviation safety improvement consultancy, Baines Simmons, to establish an industry-leading business-wide human factors and error management system (HFEMS) which at the same time delivers Maintenance Approved Organisation Scheme (MAOS) compliance.
The contract involves Baines Simmons supporting MBA in its application for MAOS MIL-Part 145 approval with the aim of satisfying the regulatory competence requirements of the Military Aviation Authority (MAA). This includes maintenance error management competence across MBA’s business. Baines Simmons will engage with more than 600 employees at MBA’s facility Higher Denham on an on-going basis that commenced in July 2012.
The MAOS and HFEMS programmes are custom-designed to meet MBA’s objectives, with Baines Simmons working in close partnership with the company’s stakeholders to evolve the optimum approach. It commenced with a training needs analysis to establish understanding of the current status and the desired outcome for MBA’s safety culture, safety attitude and error management systems vocabulary. Working with bespoke training resources, Baines Simmons’ expertise is being brought to bear and will deliver a greater emphasis on Just Culture with sustained buy-in from the affected departments. This will result in more effective error investigation and event review that will provide benefits in terms of safety, efficiency and business performance and will also deliver EASA/MAOS compliance for the company.
“We are delighted to join forces with Baines Simmons and use the company’s expertise to generate a company-wide Human Factors and Error Management System for Martin Baker,” states Mick Cameron, Business Development Manager at MBA. “We are confident that the programme will generate a thorough understanding of risk management for all our employees that will not only be good for safety but also for efficiency and business performance.”
“It is a privilege to work with a business as committed to safety improvement as Martin Baker Aircraft and we look forward to delivering reductions in loss and risk as well as the improved business performance that come with a truly effective HFEMS,” comments Chris Drew, business development manager at Baines Simmons.
