Why active Safety Leadership is key to a performing SMS (and business success)
Regulation states that an operator should implement a system to effectively manage safety risks. In complying with this, however, what is often overlooked, is that for maximum effectiveness, it needs to be implemented as part of an integrated management system, as opposed to a ‘bolt-on’ addition to existing operational arrangements. Getting safety management right not only reaps significant safety benefits, it should ensure that any risk and error reduction measures convert into tangible business benefits, which ultimately feed through to the bottom line. In essence, if safety is dealt with in isolation of operational management systems, processes and decisions, the day-job will normally dominate – ‘it’s what keeps things moving and pays the wages’.
Safety Managers alone cannot ‘make’ the organisation safe; it is the role of the safety manager to act as the focal point and be responsible for the development, administration and maintenance of an effective safety management system, supporting operational managers to make more informed decisions with respect to safety. Executive leadership teams that do not understand their safety leadership roles and how to use safety driven system improvements to drive operational benefits, often become the unwitting blockers to achieving the desired safety standards.
We help to positively influence executive and senior management teams about the need for – and benefits of investing in an integrated safety management system that delivers both risk-based decision making and business benefits, and have proven success in partnering with strategic leaders who need to internally champion the safety message and gain buy-in and commitment from their management teams.
