The ability of the interviewer to explore the interviewee’s experiences often unlocks the key learning points from an incident.
This course builds on your existing knowledge gained through previous training and your hands-on experience in the workplace. It provides the opportunity to fine-tune your investigative interviewing skills and identify effective and sustainable interventions.

This Practitioner level course is primarily designed for previously trained investigators who wish to develop or refresh their skills. It is particularly suitable for previously trained investigators who have not had the opportunity to practise their skills in live investigations.
It is appropriate for Human Factors, Quality and Safety Managers and Safety Management Coordinators.

Prerequisites
You will be expected to have attended a previous Investigator training course and have had exposure to event investigations, either as part of an investigation team or observer. Delegates should have completed a Human Factors course prior to attending this course.
Course details
Course format: This course is a balanced mix of group discussions, flipchart work and PowerPoint presentations. Managed syndicate exercises give you the opportunity to practise the application and evaluation of new processes and techniques.
Course level: Practioner Level Training (P) is suitable for those with relevant experience in the subject matter who are looking to enhance their specialist skills and knowledge and keep abreast of latest technical developments. Practioner level training also applies to Recurrent and Refresher training programmes as well as to courses that we recommend are taken in a chronological order.
Assessment process: No formal assessment. Formative feedback is given by the facilitator throughout.

Yes, this course is designed to refresh all the knowledge required to conduct an effective investigation. It covers a systematic process that guides investigators through investigation planning, data gathering, debriefing and recommendation development.
A thorough understanding of Human Factors is essential to ensure that your investigators make the causative links between failures and the safety recommendations they propose. Too often we see interventions that are ineffective, inefficient, or unsustainable, and as a result problems come back or the burden brought by the recommendation is greater than the original issue.
No, the course is not specific to any particular investigation tool or trade but focuses on teaching you the skills of investigation planning, data gathering, debriefing and developing recommendations to enable you to file any form of report required.
A pre-requisite of registering for our investigator courses is a good understanding of Human Factors. If you have attended a minimum of a 2-day Human Factors training course within the last two years, this course is likely to be at the right level for you. If not, we recommend you attend either our TS07 or TS08 Human Factors courses prior to enrolling on TS34.
The two courses are very different; AAIB largely focus on forensic investigations whereas our investigation courses focus on the human element and require a grounding in Human Factors issues. This course cannot bridge that gap – we recommend you attend our Practical Skills for Investigators course (TS30/TS05) in the first instance.
Whilst this course briefly revises Human Factors and Error Management principles, it is a long way short of – and does not replace - full Human Factors refresher training. We recommend you attend our one-day TS08 Recurrent Safety Training - Improving Human Performance and Understanding Human Factors training course first to ensure you can subsequently derive maximum value from this course.
