Baines Simmons expertise goes to Sea!

Following our consulting and training success with the Royal Air Force, Baines Simmons was recently invited by the Royal Navy to review key aspects of safety and airworthiness management.

Given very short notice to engage, Baines Simmons commissioned a rapid deployment team to deliver an Error Management Diagnostic from our SMARRT™ (Safety Management and Risk Reduction Tool) kit.

A four person team led by Steve Harriss – Senior Consultant Baines Simmons completed shore-based reviews at RNAS Yeovilton and Culdrose before embarking HMS Illustrious on the Clyde and sailing off the west coast of Britain for three days before disembarking on a Merlin Helicopter to RNAS Yeoviliton.

Over three days aboard, the team conducted a structured programme of interviews, observations and analysis from a cross-section of all levels of aviation personnel on the carrier from Senior Executive Officers, to Pilots, Air Traffic and Maintenance personnel. Baines Simmons met the tight deadlines to provide immediate feedback at RNAS Yeovilton on the afternoon following departure from the carrier, presenting a written summary to support high-level meetings in the following days.

Commander Nick Clarke from the Royal Navy Flight Safety and Accident Investigation Centre RNFSAIC and Lieutenant Commander Colin Russell accompanied us during parts of the review and were highly impressed by the Baines Simmons team’s facilitation skills and flight operation aviation knowledge and expertise. “They quickly acquired significant safety culture information and perspectives that were both enlightening and stimulating to us”.

The project marked many firsts for Baines Simmons including an opportunity to develop a new Operations version of its SHoME tool (Safety Health of Maintenance Engineering) which has been further developed to become SHOP’s, (Safety Health of Operations).

“We believe this work has delivered a unique insight into the Fleet Air Arm aviation safety culture that no other company could have achieved” says Bob Simmons founding Technical Director Baines Simmons. “This project illustrates our breadth of capability, to partner the UK Ministry of Defence. Yet again we have proven our ability to act as Trusted Advisors, to work in a safety partnership with both Central Safety Policy areas and in the Forward, Operational domains”.
