Baines Simmons partners major airline in active safety leadership and positive safety culture
With world-leading Human Factor and Error Management programmes delivering real return on investment, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is making good progress in terms of further improvement of KLM’s Safety Management System (SMS). However it was felt that some expert help would benefit certain elements of what is a major change management programme.

As the industry leading aviation safety improvement consultancy, Baines Simmons was selected to act as the strategic Safety Management partner working closely with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines to achieve set business improvement goals. The aim is to to leave the airline with a visible and integrated people centric safety management capability.
The three themes of the resulting partnership are
- Planning and enabling KLM’s Road Map for the next stage of KLM’s SMS, including Engaging and Implementing (switching-on SMS for performance)
- Training to empower KLM to actively contribute to safety through enhanced language, behaviours and optimised reporting
- Developing a safety management and safety measurement capability (helping KLM to make the SMS work through management and measurement)
Captain Michiel van Dorst, EVP KLM Flight Operations & Deputy COO KLM said: “We chose Baines Simmons to support us in further building a safety culture. We recognise that this is one of the key challenges presented by our SMS journey. For KLM, safety is the precondition for our daily operations. However, the actual strength of safety performance can only come through active safety leadership and a positive safety culture. Baines Simmons will provide us with expert outside-in knowledge and support. ”
Baines Simmons Managing Director, Keven Baines said, “The primary aim of a Safety Management System is to provide more informed risk-based safety decision-making. For this to be successful, it should not be viewed as simply a series of organization-wide processes; the key feature is the positive safety culture, whereby communication throughout the organization is comprehensive and transparent, and active safety leadership. Through this two-year strategic safety partnership, Baines Simmons has three overriding objectives – to leave our client in the possession of a world-class safety management capability that delivers protection from harm; that improves bottom-line profits and, above all, that results in non-reliance on Baines Simmons – self-sufficiency.”
“We like Baines Simmons because they bring a pragmatic insight in terms of how to do SMS,” states Captain Klaas Kuin Project Manager SMS Development Team.
