New Zealand CAA awarded safety leadership award

Auckland Airport recently selected the New Zealand CAA as the inaugural winner of their Safety Leadership Award due to the leadership shown during the implementation of Safety Management Systems under Part 100 of the [New Zealand] Civil Aviation Rules. The CAA has proactively engaged with industry on the Safety Management System requirements, offered many training days free of charge around the country, produced practical resources for participants to use, conducted workshops to prepare participants for the certification process and staged or participated in seminars and industry meetings for industry to engage and share their experiences.

Auckland Airport’s General Manager Operations Anna Cassels-Brown said that “the CAA has created the safety framework which will lift the safety culture of the entire aviation community in New Zealand.  For that reason we considered it entirely appropriate to recognise the significant contribution and leadership the CAA has made to aviation safety, not only at Auckland Airport, but across all of New Zealand during the SMS implementation process”

Neil Richardson, Principal Consultant at Baines Simmons, was invited by the New Zealand CAA over 4 years ago to provide training to their staff and the New Zealand Aviation industry in support of the great SMS promotional activities that the CAA were carrying out. Since then and over 8 visits later, New Zealand is achieving some great things in the advancement of safety.

Neil says “I see many views of SMS in my work but what I love about the work with the New Zealand community is that they keep SMS pragmatic and simple and focus on the real issues. Making it fit their operations and making it work for them is a real enabler in the SMS journey and the engagements have been an absolute pleasure”.

Here we promote the work achieved by the New Zealand CAA and the New Zealand aviation community and pass our congratulations to the dedicated SMS team [past and present] and currently headed up by Charlotte Mills with support from Mark Price and Austin Healey.
