NPO Saturn is the first Russian aircraft engine manufacturer to be awarded POA By EASA

Russian aircraft engine manufacturer, NPO Saturn, has just been awarded a Production Organisation Approval (POA) certificate for its SaM146 engine, with assistance provided by aviation safety experts, Baines Simmons. NPO Saturn is the first company in Russia to achieve this certification and is now able to supply its state-of-the-art products to the European market.

NPO SaturnThe certification by EASA means the manufacturer is now free to independently produce the SaM146 engine for the European market. It can also place orders with other Russian and foreign businesses and autonomously select suppliers for the company’s SaM146 engine programme. The impact is immediately evident in the rapid boost in production of the engine, from 48 units in 2012 to 96 in 2013.

“The award of the POA by EASA is an historic event, not just for NPO Saturn but also for the whole Russian nation. It places us on the same business basis as the world’s leading gas-turbine machinery manufacturers and opens up the opportunity for us to do business with the aviation industry across the whole of Europe,” says Sergey Antropov, quality director at NPO Saturn in Rybinsk, Russia.

“We recognise Baines Simmons’ indispensible contribution to the attainment of the world-class quality assurance system that enables NPO Saturn to demonstrate compliance with all the international and domestic airworthiness requirements.”

“We were delighted to assist NPO Saturn’s SaM146 team during the company’s EASA POA certification process and to witness the recognition of the company’s achievements by EASA,” says Kevin Hopwood, senior consultant at Baines Simmons. “The successful outcome of our work with the NPO Saturn quality team is a testament to the insight Baines Simmons can bring in terms of a thorough understanding of regulatory requirements.”

The SaM146 engine combines a wealth of features that will support its entry into the fiercely competitive world market for regional jet aircraft engines. These include low cost of ownership, high fleet dispatch reliability, high level of maintainability and also ability to meet the most stringent environmental standards.
