The Royal Navy gets SMARRT™
The Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm (FAA) has joined an ever-growing client list of major aviation organisations to have selected Baines Simmons to deliver our Safety Management and Risk Reduction Tool (SMARRT™) diagnostic assessment service.
SMARRT™ is a unique, mature and highly successful process whereby a carefully selected team of subject matter experts critically analyse the organizations management processes. In this case the Error Management Diagnostic EMD chosen by the client has been enhanced to enable further in-depth analysis of the FAAs four pillars of safety management: Maintenance, Flight Operations, Air Traffic Management and Ground Support. The diagnostic will be conducted across three key operating environments; air station, squadron and ship.
Baines Simmons has made a significant investment in the further development of the Flight Operations element of the tool set. Karl Brady (one of our Flight Operations specialists) and Dr Sarah Flaherty (Human Factors Psychologist) have been working on the development of Flight Operations Safety (FOSH) as an upgraded element within the SMARRT™ toolset, which will be used within the FAA project.
The initial work will see the Baines Simmons specialists visiting the Royal Naval Air Stations at Culdrose and Yeovilton followed by an Aircraft Carrier and Frigate/Destroyer. These visits will enable the team to measure and evaluate the comprehensiveness and efficacy of the current safety processes, and culture. The output of this activity is then fed into the proprietary tools which enable effective analysis of the safety and cultural enablers in evidence, culminating in a detailed management report highlighting areas which may require attention. Steve Harriss, one of our foremost consultants with extensive experience of delivering and developing the SMARRT™ system will be leading this project and is being supported by two of our Consultants: Dr Sarah Flaherty and Claire Simons MSc.
Steve Harriss commented, “I feel this is a great opportunity to take a fresh look at an organisation that already has a very good safety record whilst working in a highly dynamic environment. It provides the opportunity to review the safety elements that are currently in place, and tackle those that may not be performing as well – I believe this could prove to be a significant evolution for Naval Aviation safety.”
The Baines Simmons SMARRT™ tool is particularly useful in that it takes the present real system inputs and outputs rather than subjective views. It diagnoses the system safety elements which are working effectively, and those that are not performing as well as they might. The tool has been developed and refined through Baines Simmons’ extensive contact with many of the world’s leading aviation organisations.
The Royal Navy is the 23rd client organisation to partner with Baines Simmons for the industry leading SMARRT™ process. Previous clients include: Agusta Westland, Qantas Airlines, bmi, Royal Air Force Flight Safety, Thomson Airways and QinetiQ to name just a few.
