Virgin Atlantic selects Baines Simmons for Safety Management programme
Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd. has selected Baines Simmons to develop and facilitate a world-leading and sustainable training programme that will improve maintenance standards and enhance safety culture.
Starting in July 2010, 550 Virgin Atlantic Engineering Staff will have the opportunity to participate in a 1-day Safety Management Systems workshop as part of their continuing professional development. The focus will be on the development of hazard identification and risk management skills and how individuals and teams can address the challenges of maintaining world-leading maintenance and safety standards.

Whilst many organisations may view a training course as ‘job complete,’ Virgin Atlantic sees the benefits of structured follow-up activities as key to increasing the likelihood of longer-term sustainable learning transfer. Baines Simmons will be working closely with the Virgin Atlantic Engineering management team and supervisors to develop this long-term approach, supporting them via coaching, top-up sessions and on-call assistance to design and implement a ‘sustainment programme’. This will ensure that direct links are made that tie employees’ development goals closely into the organization-wide safety management system and so contribute to positive change in Virgin Atlantic’s overall safety culture.
Keven Baines, Managing Director, commented, “We are very proud to be a partner in this programme of ongoing commitment to the development of a Safety First culture within VAA and it forms a key enabler in their ongoing journey to world-leading safety management. Baines Simmons and VAA share very similar ethics and will prove to be a close fit in terms of values.”
In choosing Baines Simmons as their partner for this innovative programme, Virgin Atlantic will benefit from independent and impartial facilitation, the application of current industry best practice and fresh thinking from the most enthusiastic aviation training consultants. And the format of workshops and follow-up programme will make it much easier to measure tangible returns on organisational investments.
Phil Maher, Director of Engineering, confirmed, “We chose Baines Simmons because they are specialist and proven leaders in this type of facilitated training. We feel highly confident that Baines Simmons share our values and can deliver demonstrable results to Virgin Atlantic Airways”.
