Uncrewed Human Factors & CRM Essentials

TS135 | 1 day

Uncrewed aviation is expanding at pace and autonomous systems are reshaping the industry faster than most anticipated. But that does not mean that the human is removed from the loop – it is the nature of human involvement that has changed.

The Ground Control Station environment, distributed team structures, increasing levels of automation and complex operational decisions all introduce human performance challenges that are unique to the uncrewed world - and that generic aviation Human Factors training simply does not address.

How will this course benefit me?

Fatigue, cognitive overload, poor decision-making under pressure, miscommunication and weak coordination between people and systems are among the leading contributors to incidents in uncrewed operations. These are not abstract risks - they are present in every mission. Uncrewed operators need training that is contextually relevant, operationally grounded and aligned to the regulatory landscape within which they actually work.

This one-day virtual course provides both a regulatory grounding and a practical toolkit. By the end of the day, you will have applicable skills that make a difference in real operations:

  • Enhanced Situation Awareness (SA) capability
  • Improved decision making under pressure
  • More effective communication and stronger team coordination
  • Preparation for regulatory CRM developments for Level 2 UAS operations

Key areas of focus

  • UK CAA regulatory framework for HF and CRM in uncrewed operations
  • Human information processing, the limits of memory, cognitive biases, performance under pressure, shared SA and the challenges of remote and distributed operations
  • Human-Machine Interface design, automation complacency and the changing role of the human operator
  • Fatigue and stress — causes, effects and individual and team responsibilities for management
  • Crew Resource Management — core principles, leadership and followership, team dynamics, authority gradients
  • Threat and Error Management — identifying threats, trapping errors and building operational resilience

Is this course right for me?

This course is relevant to anyone with an operational or supervisory role within a UAS team, regardless of experience level. • Team / Mission Leads and Flight Operations Managers
  • Observers and Visual Observers
  • Datalink and Payload Specialists
  • UAS Safety and Compliance Officers
  • Training Leads and Instructors within UAS organisations
  • Ground crew and support personnel with an active role in mission planning or execution
  • Quality and Safety Managers overseeing uncrewed operations
  • Supervisors and team leaders responsible for operational performance and crew welfare

Frequently Asked Questions

I already hold a UAS Level 1 licence and have completed Human Performance theory training. Is this course the right next step?

Yes. If you are progressing towards Level 2 operations, this course is the natural next step. It builds directly on the Human Performance theory that underpins the Level 1 licence and extends it into applied CRM principles, team dynamics and the practical skills required for Level 2 BVLOS operations.

Is this course aligned to the UK CAA's anticipated CRM training requirements for Level 2?

Yes. The course has been designed with those anticipated requirements in mind. The curriculum covers the HF and CRM competencies expected to form part of the Level 2 theoretical standard. As the UK CAA publishes formal requirements, the course will be updated accordingly.

I work in traditional crewed aviation and also have a role in UAS operations. Is this course suitable for me?

This course is specifically designed for the uncrewed context and addresses the human performance challenges that are unique to UAS operations It is not a generic aviation HF course and will provide learning that is directly applicable to your UAS role, even if you are familiar with Human Factors from a crewed aviation background.

Our whole operating team needs this training course. Can it be delivered in-house?

Yes. This course can be delivered as a private virtual event for your organisation. Delivering to your whole team together is particularly beneficial for the team dynamics and communication modules, which draw on shared operational experience. Please contact our learning advisors to discuss your requirements.
